Community Policing Case Studies

Community Policing Case Studies

Compare two of the “Cop in Action” case studies from Chapters Three, Four, or Five of the textbook. The two cases I chose are the Kansas City Gun Experiment and The East Dallas Police Storefront.

Describe the specific details that identify the course of action as a representation of one of the three policing models described. What characteristics specific to that particular policing model lead to successful implementation within the case study?

This is what someone else wrote to give you a example  Operation cease fire, Boston, Massachusetts will be the first Cop In Action case study I will discuss.  The Boston department focused their attention on high crime areas of violence tied to gang activity.  They began by spreading the word to the gangs through many channels such as patrolman, task force members and street workers to warn the gangs that if violence erupted, swift action would be taken and severe penalties would be imposed.  Once the message was out on the streets, it did not take long for a gang to challenge them so when a violent outbreak occurred, the department responded with swift retaliation and many members were arrested  (Oliver, 2008).

This describes the strategic oriented policing strategy to the letter as the department focused on one particular crime base and put resources, a plan and brought community involvement in to allow for its success.  The department also instituted a gun-tracking program that used a federal database with local knowledge to allow for the department to track the most used weapons in crimes to who owned them within the gangs of the community.  Again, using the specific strategy to eliminate a criminal activity which is what strategic oriented policing is  (Oliver, 2008).

Horseplay brings officers closer to the community is the second Cops In Action case study I will discuss.  This was done in Viginia Beach, Virginia where the department focused on portion of their community that was below the poverty line and had a high crime rate.  They took the mounted patrolman unit and created a program to invite young children from that area to come out and work with the horses.  Some of the children had never seen a horse before and so as they advanced through the program, they eventually got to ride the horse and put on a show for the community and were awarded prizes  (Oliver, 2008).

This is a typical program of neighborhood oriented policing that takes a program such as this and brings the department and community together.  Results from this were that relationships were built between the officers and the children and when the parents and families were able to see their children putting on a show with the police department, it added a positive outlook on the department within the community.  This would have a positive impact on cooperation within the community and would allow for the children to respect and like policemen and not fear them.

In each example, specific targets were identified and a specific plan was developed to address the issue and eliminate the criminal element.  The Boston Police Department identified a specific element and group that they wanted to focus their attention on and created the program to reduce their influence and activity in their community.  The Virginia Beach Department created a neighborhood-oriented program that would put officers in the community and build a working relationship.  Both examples were a positive approach to community policing.

This assignment will basically deal with the two case studies that I have chosen. The main reason for this is because the two case studies talk more on the community policing case studies. Therefore, the Kansas City Gun Experiment is the first case study which I have handled and detailed more information on it. The course of action was catalyzed by specific details concerning the violent perpetrators carrying guns with the country. For this reason, the country together with other groups
