The United States is a nation of many races, ethnicities, and nationalities. Many groups in this country have experienced discrimination. Think about discrimination you have experienced or witnessed and answer the following questions:

  • What’s the difference between individual and institutional discrimination? Be sure to give a specific example of each type of discrimination in your response.

Discrimination is the disparity in treatment through harmful actions against another party. It may occur by race, age, sex, religion, or disability. Individual discrimination is where a person experiences biased treatment from another person. It occurs between two individuals. For example, an employer who rejects job applications from black job seekers. On the other hand, institutional discrimination takes a broader scope as discrimination of a group emanating from the social institutions.
