Personality Disorders

Personality Disorders

Assignment 2: Personality Disorders—Fact or Fiction?

Personality disorders are chronic and persistent behavioral and emotional disturbances that are often difficult to treat. Some professionals argue that these disorders are not mental disorders at all, but personality styles—that these individuals are just odd or unusual. Review your text book and a minimum of two peer reviewed references and develop an argument for or against the inclusion of personality disorders as a diagnostic category in the next version of the DSM. Be sure to support your position with relevant research on the causation, diagnosis, and treatment of personality disorders.

Develop your position into a 2-3-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources and include a cover page and reference page. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M4_A2.doc.

Personality disorders are demanding to diagnose and this makes them difficult to treat and this is the reason why they should not be included in diagnostic category. In order to understand personality disorder clearly, I will discuss how studying the causation of personality disorder and studying causation are challenging. The main reason for this is because there has been a long debate on personality disorders. This was evidenced after several people begun arguing and pinpointing minor issues concerning personal disorder. The main reason for this is because many health professionals argued that personality disorders are not mental disorder at all while others argued that personality disorders involve personal behaviors and styles (Chapman, & Gratz, 2011). Basing my understanding and views from my peers, it is true to say that personality disorders depend on people’s behavior and the location they find themselves in and not some of the underlying aspects of personality. On the other hand, viewing from an eagle’s eye, many people argue that personality disorder is real and does play a vital role in people’s lives.
