Life under Slavery

Before the occurrence of the civil war, slavery was very common in the American South. The instituting of slavery meant that the black folks in the Southern states of America were not treated like humans(Penningroth, 2007). For the many of the slave owners, the slaves were property, and hence they were not guaranteed any rights. This led to the exploitation and suffering of the slaves. As it was the case in the south, the institution of slavery played a pivotal role in the economic development of America, especially in the Southern States. The slaves were the pulse of all economic development in the South because they provided cheap, or sometimes free labour in the plantations. During the period before the civil war, the slaves who worked on the plantations were exploited more than ever, and they did not have control over their lives…………………………words 642
