The Role of the Victim of Domestic Violence

It was not until the women’s movement of the 1960s and 1970s that the voices of those being abused were heard. The battered women’s movement emerged, becoming one of the most powerful social justice and service movements in United States history.

In 1994, The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was passed. VAWA was a major federal bill that provided more than $1 billion to be used to assist battered women’s shelters, train law enforcement personnel and judges, and support other crime-prevention efforts addressing violence against women.

Consider the following statement: “The role of the victim of domestic violence has helped shape criminal justice responses.”

For this assignment, please review the previous statement and then write an essay that either supports or opposes this statement. Base your response on your reading and review of the textbook and presentation in the Week Five Learning Activities area. Use outside resources as needed.

Domestic violence can occur in any relationship regardless of ethnic group, religion, education, income level or sexual orientation. Alternatively, it can also occur between unmarried people or married people. This all depends on the type of relationship people experiences throughout their lives. For this reason, domestic violence happens between two people in a marriage relationship or in a dating relationship. Many people have been wondering what might be the causes of such violence between two lovers.  For this reason, many have come up with different views about the social warfare of different families in order to obtain the main causes these problems. For example, many researchers proposed that poor self image has increased domestic violence in different families.
